CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I don’t think I ever ran harder. The Van Helsing brothers’ verbal joust had turned into a wrestling match. I didn’t know what they were fighting about, but they’d both touched the demon. Envy must’ve been the instigator.

I grabbed my brooch and pinned it to my shirt as Zoey threw on her cloak. We went astral and took off down the hall.

The demon was by the door. Its shadowy form was massive—it looked just like the one I thought was Sloth before. Now I wondered if it had been Envy the whole time or if he’d replaced Sloth in Dennis as a host after the other demons abducted him.

If they abducted him at all. Envy might have up and left and spray-painted the false message supposedly from Pride to throw us off. He could have even cut off his own legs just because he knew if he did we’d have no choice but to touch him to move him.

The demon’s eyes glowed red from within its smoky mass. Was it waiting for us this whole time?

Zoey summoned her scythe and took off after it. I followed close behind.

The demon flew straight through the door, and Zoey and I gave chase down the streets. It was heading back toward the French Quarter.

If we didn’t catch the bastard, Dracula, Dylan, and both Van Helsings would be left as they were, fighting with each other. Given the progression of the other vices we’d already seen in those infected, it was probably only a matter of time before the envy turned murderous.

The only hope we had beyond that was what was left of the holy water. Dracula still had the vial. If we didn’t kill Envy, I’d have to take it from him. It’s not within the nature of one consumed by envy to be generous with something like that.

As an astral being, the demon could move as fast as we could. I wasn’t even sure we could catch him.

Another shadowy demon shot out from between two houses. It looked identical to Envy as it flew beside him.

Until it didn’t.

We were only a couple blocks off Bourbon Street. We were running so fast I’d lost track of which streets we were on when one of the demons headed in one direction and the other made a sharp turn to the north.

“We have to split up!” Zoey shouted.

“What? I can’t use my—”

“We’ll lose these things if we don’t!”

We couldn’t argue about it. There wasn’t any time for that. If I could catch one of the demons, well, if I had to use my lunar abilities, that would only be two of the seven I killed. So far we’d seen no evidence that using my abilities to kill Gluttony had awakened Sin, the Babylonian moon god.

I wasn’t sure which demon I was chasing, but I was pretty sure it was Envy who Zoey was after.

I followed the demon down a dead-end ally. There was no reason for it to stick to the alley. Why not
